Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
Compulsory Basic Training was introduced by the Government in December 1990 as a measure to prevent young riders from buying a motorcycle and then taking it on the public roads without any form of training or experience. As from 1st January 1997, ANYONE who wants to ride a motorcycle on the public road has to first undertake Compulsory Basic Training. This means that, even though a Full Car Licence has the Provisional Cat A, everyone has to complete Compulsory Basic Training before they can legally ride on the public roads. The CBT Course usually takes One Full Day, however, if a student fails to reach the Safe Competent standard required then further training will be provided.
CBT is not a test it is an assessment to ensure all motorcyclists achieve a safe and competent standard of riding before they are allowed into the public roads, on their own and unsupervised. Having obtained the CBT Certificate a student may then ride a motorcycle of up to 125cc and 15bhp with L-plated. Pillion Passengers MUST NOT be carried by Learning riders. Learner Riders are NOT allowed on Motorways.
What you need to have on the day of your CBT
1. You MUST have a Category A Licence.
2. You should wear good stout Boots or Shoes that cover the ankle and are waterproof. Trainers are not recommended.
3. You should wear a good weatherproof Jacket that will keep you warm. Fashion Jackets are not recommended.
4. It is recommended that you bring along something to eat at lunchtime. (It’s a long day, 9am – 4pm)
5. Helmet, Gloves and Waterproofs can be provided.

Direct Access
This option is open to learner riders aged 21 or over. Such riders can take one test to give them direct access to any size of motorcycle. However, they will have to take a CBT course before riding on the road. Note: All CBT courses are taken on a 125cc. All new riders are required to produce their “In Date” CBT Certificate and undertake an assessment lesson on a 125cc.
Riders may practice on any size of motorcycle, but the test must be taken on a motorcycle of at least 35kW (46.6bhp). Riders who take practice lessons on a motorcycle, which exceeds 125cc, must;
Be accompanied at all times by an approved Instructor, on another motorcycle and in radio contact.
Have fitted L-plates to your motorcycle.
Wear fluorescent or reflective safety clothing during supervision.
Follow Provisional Licence restrictions.
Note: On the day of your test an approved Instructor must accompany you to and from the Test Center.

Advanced Rider Training
We offer a special discounted “Advanced Rider Training” course. The course can be tailored to your own requirement and will be conducted over one, two, three or 4 days. Tuition with a RoSPA Gold qualified instructor covering all aspects of advanced riding will consolidate and enhance your riding skills, plus the chance to forward for your own RoSPA award of either:-
